“101010- Buils a Dream” Campaign
Q) What is The Centre for Dreams?
A) The Centre for Dreams is a day program dedicated to providing a curriculum
designed specifically for adults with intellectual challenges. We provide these special
individuals with educational programs and social skills training with the hopes of integrating
them into the community - both independently and confidently. We want to ensure that
they will become productive, independent, dignified and respected members therein.
Q) What will the new centre do for the members?
A) It will guarantee the continuity of The Centre for Dreams. While many
Communities around the area have no centres for those with intellectual disabilities, The
Centre for Dreams provides educational programs such as reading, writing, social and life
skills as well as therapeutic learning. We strive for the members to flourish and grow. The
new centre will support all adults with intellectual challenges as a vibrant and growing
centre.
The Centre for Dreams is readily recognized in York Region as a leading provider of
programs and services for people with intellectual challenges. We celebrate the abilities and
accomplishments of our members and share our enthusiasm with the community at large.
We offer individualized and challenging programs that are dynamic, enriching and
meaningful to all members in a lively and empowering environment. These on-site
programs will service a minimum of 50 members, aged 16 years and over and will be
representative of the diversity found within York Region.
Q) Whom is the new facility geared for?
A) The Centre for Dreams is meant for adults aged 16 and over with developmental
disabilities – all will benefit from the new facility, regardless of background or gender.
Everyone is accepted for who they are and can therefore truly feel included in the centre.
Q) I already support another organization, why should I support The Centre
for Dreams?
A) All of York Region’s organizations are truly wonderful and necessary for a vibrant
community. They are the body and what holds the community together. However, having a
centre for adults with developmental disabilities is in high demand. Each year there are
many individuals who are pushed in the shadow of a wait list. If people in the community
lack appreciation of the life of individuals and do not recognize the need of funds, all the
families, friends, members, facilities and projects of the centre suffer. The centre will be the
backbone of members, and the heart and soul of the developmentally disabled Community.
This will secure and promise the opportunities of the members of The Centre for Dreams
have and the continuity of all organizations dealing with intellectual disabilities - not just for
today but also well into the future.
Q) Why do we need this new centre? Where does this fit in to the
community?
A) The site is an integral part of the body and social arm of our community. However,
a body can only survive if it is endowed with a soul. With a soul, not only can the body
survive, it can also grow and flourish. Our proposal is to purchase a centre that feeds the
soul of the developmentally challenged. The result will be that the centre will be sustained
long term as well.
Q) I do not have or know any persons with intellectual disabilities. Why
should I be interested?
A) We do not put labels on people. We have one thing that we share and that unites
us. One community, Countless dreams. We are all people, and like us, they have dreams
and goals.
Q) Does The Centre for Dreams get funding from the government
A) Just 8% of our income comes through the government, the funding that comes
through the centre is from fundraising events, sponsorship and grants. All fundraising is
done locally.
Q) How are you going to sustain such a facility?
A) We have over 20 years of history in the Markham area as an organization. We
have been fiscally responsible all this time.
Our annual operating budget has more than doubled over the last 5 years, from various
fundraising events and sponsorships. We have consistently been able to increase our
funding sources and there is no reason to think that this trend will not continue.
Q) How can I help?
A) You can contribute financially. This is a major undertaking that requires serious
commitments. It is an excellent opportunity to maintain the memory of loved ones and
family names in a beautiful facility that will give continuity to the members and non
members of the centre.
Q) Are the Centre For Dreams annual reports available to the public?
A) They certainly are! The annual report can be viewed here, and the financial statement can be viewed here.
Any type of contribution will help; cheques, cash, credit cards (except American Express).
All donations over $10.00 are tax-deductible.
Obviously, the more capital that we have up front, the easier it will be to proceed.
Nevertheless, you can arrange to give payments over a longer period. What is most
important is that you give an amount that you can be proud of, with your heart and soul.
You can also help by sharing the excitement about this project with friends and encourage
them to give as well. Together we will build a bright new future on the solid foundations.
